Some notes on the midterm October 1, 2006

Here are a few notes on the upcoming midterm exam:

  • I’m going to leave the study sheets as given for the summer session — you should look at the study sheets from chapters 1-4, along with the additional readings. In addition, you should browse through the talks, since those may also be referenced on the exam. Some critical additions from summer term: the additional material on analogy and the Biederman and Lowe models of vision.
  • There will probably be fewer multiple-choice and more short-answer questions on the exam.
  • For longer or more difficult questions, you may be able to pick the questions you want to answer (e.g., answering 3 of 5 questions). For example, I may ask you to describe a framework with some detail (e.g., Gentner, Tverksy, Biederman, Marr, Lowe) rather than answer a multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank about a single aspect.

Good luck in your studies!

Homework 2 & Midterm 1 September 22, 2006

As we discussed in class today, I’ve posted homework 2 on the Homework page. Homework 2 will be due by the end of next week, but since you’ll be reading Biederman for Friday anyway (you need to read the homework to see why this is important), it shouldn’t be hard to complete it by then.

I’ve also moved the first midterm to Wednesday, October 4. I’ll talk about study sheets early next week, but the study sheets from this summer should be a good guide.

All study sheets and lectures are now available July 27, 2006

I’ve added this week’s lectures and the Ch 10 and 12 study sheets. These should be enough to guide you as you study for the final.

Just a reminder about the final:

  • It will be from 8-10 am on Tuesday in our usual classroom.
  • The test will be 70% multiple-choice (or similar “short answer” questions) and 30% short essay
  • There will be 3-5 essay questions, but you will only have to answer 2-4 of them (i.e., you can skip the essay question that looks the hardest).

Also, for those who are doing extra credit: the HCI study has closed for the semester (I apologize for the false lead) but the EEG experiment is going forward. Note that the slots for that experiment are limited, so you should have a backup plan.

Good luck in your studying!

Midterm 2 will be this Thursday at 10 am. It will be similar in format to the first midterm and will cover chapters 5-9.

To prepare, I suggest you go through the study sheets and lecture notes (in the reading list), which are now all posted (with the exception of the evolutionary cognition linguistics lecture, which will be posted soon).

I’ve also decided to only have the test on Thursday, so we will not have an additional lecture on that day. The test will still be 60 minutes, however.

If you currently have an excused absence for this Thursday, please let me know by this Monday so we can set up an alternative testing time.

I've posted the lectures from this week. Enjoy.

As I noted last week, we'll be talking about Biederman on Tuesday. You should go ahead and start the next chapter, however, since we'll begin that in the second half of class.

Because we're just finishing Biederman, we'll probably stop there for the first midterm. This week's chapter — on memory, imagery, and problem-solving — will be on midterm 2.

I've uploaded the study sheets for chapters 2-4, which should help you review the set of topics you'll need for the midterm.  They are available on the new "Study Sheets" page.

Enjoy.  More study sheets should be posted tomorrow.

I've made some minor edits to the homeworks to make them clearer.
